Owned by Facebook, Instagram is a photo and video-sharing social media network. Users of the app can not only upload photos and videos but can also use various filters to edit them. These posts can be organized with tags and local information while account holders can share them publicly or with pre-approved followers.
Trending content can be viewed, liked, followed or added to their feed by browsing users and they can also search for content through tags and locations. Since 2015, content can be displayed in 1080 pixels and messaging features were added. Users have the ability to add multiple videos or pictures to one post. “Stories”, a similar feature to Snapchat, allows users to add photos and videos to a sequential feed. Each post is available for 24 hours and the feature is used by 500 million users daily as of January 2019.
When it was originally launched in October 2010, it was only available on iOS, but by mid-2011 it became available on Android. Instagram is now available on all phones, including Windows and on all browsers. Videos and photos can only be posted by mobile applications.
Who are the founders of Instagram?
Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger are the founders of Instagram. The two already had a multi-featured HTML5 check-in project that was based on mobile photography called Burbn and since it was too similar to Foursquare, they decided to focus it more on photo-sharing. Instagram was a word born out of two words, instant camera and telegram and reflects the fascination that the two founders always had with instant photography and how it has evolved.
The company started off with seed funding of $500,000 and later raised $7 million from various investors followed by $50 million from venture capitalists. They were bought by Facebook in 2012 for 1 billion with a commitment to let the company be managed independently.
Where are the headquarters of Instagram?
Campus Building in Menlo California is the headquarters of Facebook and this is where Instagram is based. In the early days of its development, Systrom and Krieger were based in San Francisco.
When Instagram launched in 2010, it quickly reached one million registered users and by the end of its first year, it had 10 million. By mid-2019 it has 1 billion users and the person with the most followers on Instagram is Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese professional footballer has 188 million followers.
Instagram’s revenues are mostly from advertising and its estimated generated revenue for 2018 was $6.84 billion. Instagram users can build a shopping list inside the platform from products that they like in Stories and the Feed and they can then go to checkout to complete their purchase.
Like most similar types of social media platforms, Instagram has faced criticism for uploaded content by users that is illegal or improper content; there have also been allegations of censorship and criticism for changes to its interface. China, North Korea, and Turkey blocked Instagram at various stages in the past to prevent photos of various incidents or events spreading. Interestingly, the country where Instagram surpasses the followers of all other social media networks is in Iran.
