Who started Yahoo.com?
Yahoo was started by two graduate students at Stanford University, Jerry Yang and David Filo. The students created bookmarks, combined the lists, organized them by categories and put them on a college site. The list began to grow into an internet marvel. It was the first ever internet directory and it became very popular with both students and non-students. The pioneering students, who had postponed their graduate studies, got involved in a public offering for a multi-million-dollar corporation and Yahoo! was born. The company was incorporated in March 1995. By October 2005, it was processing about 3.4 billion website page views all over the world. In 2017, Yahoo’s internet business was bought by Verizon Communications for US$4.48 billion but the sale excluded shareholding in the Alibaba Group and Yahoo! Japan.
According to Yahoo’s frequently asked questions, the word Yahoo is the abbreviation of “Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle.”
